Lactose Intolerance Symptoms

You may be suffering from lactose intolerance and still do not know it. This disease is very common among a lot of people. Experts through studies say that 70% of the human population around the world suffers from this disturbing syndrome. Lactose intolerance is also called lactase deficiency or hypolactasia. All mammals can suffer from this form of abnormality. It is can be felt by those persons who are deficient if not lack certain enzymes known as lactase. Lactase is responsible for breaking down milk sugar into glucose and galactose. When milk sugar is not processed into more simple sugars, the blood will not be able to absorb it properly and will eventually cause some complications.

People who suffer from lactose intolerance exhibit a number of symptoms after consuming foods with certain substance. Lactose is a sugar mostly found in milk and dairy products. If this sugar is not broken down into simpler sugar, this is when the problem occurs. Gas pains, nausea, bloating, diarrhea and stomach cramps are usually the symptoms of lactose intolerance. These disturbing indications are felt thirty minutes to two hours after digesting foods or drinks containing lactose. The severity of the symptoms also depends on the amount of lactose ingested.

There are a number of lactose intolerance causes. These are classified mainly into three. First is primary lactase deficiency. It is the most common and usually affects adults. This type of intolerance is said to be genetic. The second type is acquired or transient lactase deficiency and this is attained when an infant experiences an injury or sickness in the small intestine like gastroenteritis, chemotherapy or intestinal parasites. The rarest type is called congenital lactase deficiency. People with this type of deficiency have no ability to digest lactose since birth. They cannot even have breast milk when born.

These are just a few things that people have to be aware of. There are still a lot of concepts that should be taken into account regarding lactose intolerance.
