Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects the large intestine. It is characterized by persistent abdominal pain and discomfort. Other symptoms of this condition are bloating and alteration of bowel habits. Some individuals who suffer from this disorder experience constipation and others experience also diarrhea. There are still others who go through diarrhea and constipation alternately. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can really be a discomfort but it does not actually harm or damage the intestines.

More women suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) than men. This disorder unfortunately has no known exact cause and cannot be treated directly and entirely. Experts are still studying the possible causes of this condition. One of which is a problem in the colon muscle. The colon is a part of the large intestine and may not work normally. The muscle in it might have too many contractions that can cause diarrhea or constipation. It can also be caused by the sensitivity of one’s small or large intestine. Scholars are also looking into the mental health issues of a person with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). They say that anxiety and depression can contribute to the discomfort. Stress causes the intestines to be more sensitive thus stressed individuals may experience pains in the stomach.

As what was mentioned above, the causes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBM) are not yet certain. This is why unfortunately there is no exact and direct treatment for this. Nevertheless, it can still be treated by easing its symptoms. The symptoms can be alleviated through a change in eating habits, probiotics, some medicines and through psychological therapy. A change in the diet of a person suffering from IBS is something very helpful.

Having a condition like IBS can really be a problem. It can definitely affect anyone’s lifestyle. However, having irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is nothing to be ashamed of; it is just how one takes care of his body.
